The Oven Cleaning Door Is Locked on a Kenmore

Kenmore stoves with an automatic cleaning feature use high heat over a period of hours to incinerate food spills into ash. When the cleaning cycle is complete and the oven cools, simply wipe away the ash with a whisk broom and dustpan. For safety, the stove is equipped with a thermal lock that prevents the door from opening while the cleaning cycle is in progress. If your Kenmore stove remains locked, try troubleshooting common problems to avoid calling a service technician. No tools are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the oven control knob to the "Off" position to interrupt a cleaning cycle in progress. Wait at least one hour for the oven to cool, which releases the thermal lock.

    • 2

Pull the lock lever above the oven door to the left to unlock the door. If the lever still will not open after the cool-down period, continue troubleshooting.

    • 3

Cut off the power to the Kenmore at the circuit breaker and wait 10 minutes before restoring the electricity. This resets the electronic controls to factory defaults and may release the locking mechanism if the oven has cooled. If the lock lever will not release after all troubleshooting attempts, contact a repair technician.
