How to Cover the Words on a Stovetop Panel When Painting an Appliance

Old appliances in the kitchen may be kept looking fresh and new with an occasional paint job or touch-up. Surfaces with designs or letters must be protected from having the design covered with paint. Painter's tape is a specialty tape formulated with a leak-proof surface and weak glue. It comes up quite easily without marring the surface underneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean entire surface to be painted with a soft cloth dipped in warm, soapy water. Allow it to dry. Paint will stick to dirt or grease instead of the surface being painted. Paint will seep under painter's tape if the surface of the stove is dirty.

    • 2

Cover the words with painter's tape. Cut the painter's tape with scissors to perfectly match the area you want to protect from new paint. For example, if the words on the stove are in a rectangular plaque, cut a rectangle to cover the plaque. If you want to cover just the letters, you must cut the letter shapes out of the painter's tape and apply.

    • 3

Apply metal paint. If using spray paint, follow manufacturer's instructions. If using a paintbrush, be gentle when painting over or around the painter's tape. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Remove painter's tape by gently pulling the tape back over itself. Discard it. Your letters should be just as they were before you painted the appliance.
