How to Repair the Porcelain Enamel on a GE Appliance

GE appliances such as stoves, washing machines and dryers are built with a coat of porcelain enamel paint on the exterior cabinet. The paint creates a smooth surface while protecting the metal from rust. As with any paint formulation, the porcelain enamel on a GE appliance may be nicked or scratched if a sharp object strikes against the cabinet. This damages the appearance of your appliance, but can also encourage rusting. Match the color of your appliance to a repair kit that contains a bottle of porcelain enamel paint. The repair takes only a few minutes, followed by drying time.

Instructions

    • 1

Squeeze the degreasing detergent onto a damp sponge to clean the area on the GE appliance that needs repair. Wipe away grease, especially on stoves, as well as dirt that can keep the porcelain enamel paint from adhering to the surface.

    • 2

Dry the area with folded paper towels.

    • 3

Shake the bottle of porcelain enamel paint in your repair kit to mix the contents.

    • 4

Apply the porcelain enamel to scratches, nicks and chips on the GE appliance. For deep gouges, apply a single coat and let the porcelain enamel dry for the length of time recommended on the package, typically overnight, then add another layer of paint to the repair to fill in the damage.
