How to Troubleshoot a Wall Oven With a Blown Element

The two elements in a wall oven provide heat for baking and broiling foods. As with any electrical part exposed to regular heating and cooling, the elements in the oven may eventually wear out. If the element blows out -- which results in a sputtering sound and potentially in flames shooting briefly out of a crack in the part -- check the wiring in the oven before installing a new element. If there is a problem, contact a qualified electrician or repair technician to fix the internal wiring.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker for the wall oven to shut off the electricity.

    • 2

Open the oven and slide out the cooking racks to remove them.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the element to the back wall of the stove. The top and bottom elements are attached to metal brackets. The screws fit through these brackets, which provide support for the elements when plugged into the oven wall.

    • 4

Grab the two prongs on the end of the element where it connects to the back oven wall and pull outward to unplug the part.

    • 5

Set the multimeter to test for ohms.

    • 6

Touch the two wired probes on the multimeter to the two curved terminals on the element. A steady ohms reading means the element is good. A zero or infinite readout on the multimeter means the element circuit is burned out and the part must be replaced. Check the element's terminals for scorching or discoloration, as this is a sign of a wiring problem inside the oven that should be checked by an electrician or repair technician.
