How to Reduce the Ticking Sound of a Grandfather Clock

A grandfather clock can add a rustic look to any home. The problem with grandfather clocks is that they eventually run out of oil and, when the hands are not oiled properly, their ticking is amplified. You don’t have to be a clock expert to get your grandfather clock to tick more quietly. You can do it yourself with little hassle and minimal knowledge of the unit.

  Open the grandfather clock from the door on the front of the unit.

  Open the clock face and apply a liberal amount of clock oil to the base of second hand, which may be responsible for the loud ticking.

  Remove the screws securing the back panel of the clock with a screwdriver. Apply clock oil to all of the gears on the back of the clock. If your clock uses grease rather than oil, apply grease to the gears. The more smoothly these gears move, the less ticking you'll hear.

  Secure a small piece of cloth to the wall that the clock is resting against. The cloth will work as an insulator against the ticking noise.

  Lift the grandfather clock up if it's resting on the floor and place a small piece of cloth under it. The ticking noise may be resonating throughout your flooring, and this cuts down on any vibration.

  Remove the batteries, if it runs on them, from your grandfather clock. Even though the clock will reset, this is a surefire way to reduce the ticking noise.
