How to Retrofit a Heatilator With Gas

Heatilator is an American manufacturing company that specializes in making wood-burning and electric fireplaces, along with gas fireplace inserts. Heatilator wood fireplaces use wooden logs for fuel. Some wood fireplace owners decide to retrofit their fireplaces to gas burning types. The motives for this vary, but cleanup and having to supply wood are two common reasons why fireplace owners elect to make the conversion. Heatilator fireplaces can be converted to gas with the installation of a simple gas ignitor and addition of ceramic logs.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a professional and have him run a gas line to the fireplace if one isn't already installed. Licensed professionals are required by law in most areas to install gas lines into homes.

    • 2

Remove the log grate and any wood log remnants from the Heatilator's fireplace floor. Sweep or vacuum the fireplace floor out with a shop vac.

    • 3

Place the ignitor on the floor in the center of the fireplace.

    • 4

Screw one end of the gas line to the gas supply line connection located on the inner wall of the fireplace. Tighten it with a pipe wrench.

    • 5

Screw the other end of the gas line to the ignitor end and tighten it with the pipe wrench.

    • 6

Place the log rack back into the fireplace and stack the ceramic logs on it.

    • 7

Turn the gas supply line on using a fireplace key and then light the ignitor with a long lighter.
