Unplug the Kenmore's power cord or flip the circuit breaker off if you are unable to reach the cord.
Open the stove door to find the screws in the upper door frame that hold the glass top to the stove cabinet.
Remove the screws in the upper door frame and save these parts.
Lift the glass top gently by the front corners to a 45-degree angle. Prop up the top with the metal rod wedged between the stove cabinet and the bottom of the glass top.
Take out the screws in the metal plate covering the burner below the cooking surface. The metal plate has sharp edges, so use caution when pulling it off the burner.
Disconnect the burner element from the power socket by pulling straight out from the side opposite the socket. Grip the socket by the plug, not the wires attached to the socket and the stove, or you could break the wiring.
Plug in the socket to the new burner and fit the metal cover over it, securing with the screws.
Remove the support rod and lower the top gently with both hands to the top of the Kenmore.
Secure the glass top to the oven door frame with the screws saved in Step 3.
Restore the electricity either by plugging in the power cord or turning on the breaker.
