How to Reverse Shaded Pole Motors

Shaded pole motors are typically used in air conditioning systems to control the fan on the unit. Many people choose the reverse the shaded pole motor because it makes the motor last longer. This is similar to alternating the tires on your car. You don’t have to be an HVAC technician to reverse the motor. You can do it yourself with little hassle.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off the electricity at the breaker box.

      Turn off the AC unit at your thermostat.

    • 3

      Remove the service panel from your AC unit by removing the screws holding the service panel to the unit.

      Connect the wires from your single pull-double throw switch to the terminals on the capacitor. Connect the red wires from the switch to the positive terminal on the capacitor. Connect the blue wire to the negative terminal. The terminals are labeled on the capacitor.

      Connect the white wire from the switch to the line voltage wire coming off of your motor.

      Go to your thermostat and turn on the AC unit. Press the switch to the right to reverse the motor.

      Turn your electricity back on.
