How to Fix a Puncture in the Back of a Refrigerator

You tried to cram something into the refrigerator and a forceful shove caused it to strike and puncture the back wall. Punctures not only create unsightly cracks inside of your refrigerator, they also compromise the heat-shielding ability of the plastic liner. Return energy efficiency to your refrigerator’s plastic liner by filling the cracks with epoxy. As a filler with strong bonding ability, epoxy will create a long lasting and durable repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out the contents of the refrigerator. Turn the refrigerator off. Wait until the refrigerator comes to room temperature. Dry any moisture remaining on the inner walls of the refrigerator.

    • 2

Prepare a drill with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Drill one hole at the very end of the crack caused by the puncture. Drill another hole at the opposite end. The holes will prevent spreading cracks. Be careful to only drill through the plastic liner and not through the exterior, back wall of the appliance.

    • 3

Wipe down the area around the puncture with rubbing alcohol to clean the plastic.

    • 4

Squeeze out equal measurements of epoxy hardener and epoxy resin. Stir the two parts together with a small, flat, plastic knife.

    • 5

Apply the mixed epoxy over the puncture with a plastic spreader, forcing it into the crack and smoothing it even at the surface.

    • 6

Leave the epoxy to harden, following the wait time in the manufacturer’s instructions.
