How to Test and Calibrate a DMM

Digital multimeters are used to test the voltage, amperage or resistance of a circuit. If you are having problems with your DMM, there are a few things that you can do before you buy a new one. Testing the DMM with a known source is the best way to determine whether or not the unit is working properly. If the DMM is not calibrated properly, you can use the self-calibration setting on the unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your DMM and switch the toggle knob to the “Voltage” setting on the meter.

    • 2

Test your DMM against a brand new 9V battery. Hold the red lead to the “+” terminal on the battery and hold the black lead to the “-“ terminal on the battery. Determine if the DMM is working properly by the readout on the display.

    • 3

Change the toggle to the “SELFCAL” setting if the reading is less than 9V.

    • 4

Hold the leads to the battery terminals and wait for the multimeter to read “9V” on the display. The meter is now calibrated.
