How to Remove a Kenmore Cooktop

Kenmore sells both gas and electric cooktops for installation on top of an island or a kitchen cabinet. Either type can be removed in less than an hour for repairs or replacement using basic handheld tools. Removing a gas cooktop requires the extra step of disconnecting the gas line attached to the appliance. From there, uninstalling the Kenmore cooktop is essentially the same for both types. Follow all safety precautions when working on gas and high-voltage appliances. Watch out for sharp, metal edges on the underside of the cooktop.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn all the control knobs on the Kenmore to the off position and let the appliance cool if it has been in use.

    • 2

Unplug the power cord for the cooktop where it plugs into the socket underneath the cabinets or island. Both gas and electric models have a power cord. The gas model uses electricity for the igniter system.

    • 3

Twist the lever in the gas line under the cooktop to a 90-degree angle to shut off the gas. Unscrew the coupler between the gas line and the hose below the cooktop using an adjustable wrench. Skip this step if you have an electric-only Kenmore.

    • 4

Take out the bolts underneath the cooktop inside the cabinet or island along the back and front edges of the unit, using the nut driver. Catch the metal bar on the front and the separate bar at the back edge. Both are held in place by the bolts and will fall when the bolts are removed.

    • 5

Push up on the Kenmore from the bottom to raise the unit above the countertop at the front edge. The metal edges are sharp.

    • 6

Lift the Kenmore out of the mounting hole using both hands. Pull gently to avoid snagging the power cord or the gas hose on gas models. You can now remove the cooktop for repair or replace it with a new unit.
