Amana Range Lock Error

Appliance manufacturers use error codes as a way to specify a problem that's occurring within the limited space of a display screen. In the case of Amana ranges, the "Lock" code could mean several things. It may apply to the locking mechanism itself, but it is also signify simple problems as well. Sometimes, the issue is simple enough to fix on your own, but sometimes it's safer to call in a professional.
  1. Simple Error

    • If the word "Lock" is flashing on your display, it may just be a simple internal error that amounts to nothing more than an electronic hiccup. Press the cancel button. If the code disappears, all is well. If the code persists, unplug your range and let it sit for 10 minutes or so to let it shut down completely and then plug it back in. This allows the electronic part to clear out any internal errors and start fresh, so the code may disappear. If it reappears, the problem is something else.

    Flareups

    • If the code appeared during a cleaning cycle, it may just indicate that your oven was very dirty. Heavy food build up on the floor and walls of your oven can momentarily flame up in the high heat of a self-cleaning cycle, and when it happens too often or too intensely, the oven shuts itself down to avoid a fire. Press the cancel key to clear the code and allow the oven to cool completely. Manually remove the bulk of the build up and then run the cleaning cycle again. To avoid this problem, run the cleaning cycle more frequently so you don't give the oven a chance to collect such high levels of build up.

    Latch Switch

    • If the "Lock" code didn't appear during a cleaning cycle and unplugging doesn't remove it, you may have a faulty latch switch. The latch switch tells the oven that the door is closed, and it is the part that alerts the control panel that the door is locked. If the oven cannot tell the door is locked, it won't initiate a cleaning cycle. If it can't tell the door is closed, it may overheat the oven, which is especially the case for convection settings, to compensate for heat loss through what it perceives as an open door. Unfortunately, door latch switches are made to be replaced, not repaired. Order the exact same part made specifically for your model by Amana because generic parts may not fit correctly or can cause other damage.

    Call a Pro

    • If your oven is less than a year old, it may still be under warranty. Contact Amana for repair information. Attempting any parts replacement yourself can void your warranty. Even if your warranty has expired, parts replacement is usually best left to a professional because of the electronic components in the range. Unless you are skilled at electrical work, you probably shouldn't attempt any repair that involves wiring. Even if you don't injure yourself, you could short out your control panel -- and replacing it would cost more than calling a pro for the original problem in the first place.
