How to Check the Voltage in an Ice Maker

Checking the voltage in an ice maker is part of the troubleshooting process when evaluating a malfunctioning unit. With normal operation, the ice maker registers 110 volts when tested with a multimeter. There may be some slight fluctuation in the reading because of variances in local electric service, but the meter display should hover close to 110 volts when you perform this simple diagnostic procedure. As with any high-voltage appliance, follow the safety procedures when testing the ice maker.

Instructions

    • 1

Dial the multimeter to test for volts.

    • 2

Open the freezer door to remove the end cap on the ice maker. The plastic cap flexes slightly on the left and right edges for removal.

    • 3

Hold the two multimeter probes by the insulated handles. Do not touch the bare metal at each tip.

    • 4

Insert one probe into the hole labeled "T" on the end of the ice maker and the other probe into the hole labeled "H." Check the display on the multimeter for the test results.
