Replacing the Sparker in a GE Profile Gas Range

A General Electric (GE) Profile gas range's sparker, which is also called an igniter, is next to the pilot light. The igniter provides the electronic spark that lights the pilot. It saves energy because it allows the pilot to burn gas only when the range is in use instead of all the time, as is the case in older ranges without an igniter. You can replace a malfunctioning igniter in a GE Profile gas range by following a straightforward procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the range's electrical cord from the electrical outlet, or shut off the circuit breaker associated with the range. Even though the range operates on gas, the igniter uses electricity to create a spark.

    • 2

Empty the range's interior of the racks and all other items it stores.

    • 3

Unfasten the screws on the floor plate. Turn the screws counterclockwise using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the floor plate once all the screws are removed.

    • 4

Find the igniter, which is round and next to the pilot.

    • 5

Remove the two screws that secure the range's igniter to its bracket. Pull the wire clip from the igniter using your fingers or a pair of needle-nose pliers. Dispose of the old igniter.

    • 6

Plug the wire clip into the receptacle on the new igniter, and secure the igniter to the bracket using the screws you removed earlier. Replace the floor plate, and tighten its screws into place. Reinsert the racks, and restore the appliance's electrical power.
