What Might Be the Problem if My Electric GE Range Oven Switch Does Not Work?

General Electric electric ovens have a number of components that might cause a problem with a switch. Troubleshoot what the issue might be so you can then resolve it.
  1. Broken Fuse

    • Each GE electric range has a fuse located underneath the cooktop, though the location may vary depending on your model and the year it was designed. If the fuse is broken, the switch won't turn the oven on. To determine if the fuse is intact, remove it and inspect it. Burnt fuses will be black or dark brown, while intact fuses will appear solid and transparent with no broken glass.

    Broken Burners

    • If the switch for a burner isn’t working, but separate switches work for all of the other burners, it is likely that the burner is at fault. In this case, purchase a replacement burner and install it by pulling out the broken burner and pressing the new one into the socket.

    Broken Socket

    • If the burner continues not to work, it is likely that the socket is at fault. To replace it, remove the burner and set it aside. Then, remove the socket by unscrewing it from the range. Slide the new socket in its place and tighten the screws. Replace the new burner and test the switch to see if it works.

    Faulty Wiring

    • In some cases, the switch might be the cause of the range not working. Determine this by contacting a professional to test the electrical current after you flip the switch on, or by fixing all other issues. If the switch continues not to work, it is likely the switch is broken. Purchase a replacement switch directly from GE or a retailer.

    Power Issues

    • Always check to make sure your oven is supplied with power. It is not enough to make sure the oven is plugged in, however, as the outlet might be broken. Plug another appliance into the outlet to see if it has power. If not, the problem is with the outlet or your home’s fuse system.
