How to Disconnect Wires From a Thermal Limiter

A thermal limiter is an electronic switch designed to open once it detects a specific temperature. They are commonly used in clothes dryers and automobile air conditioners as a method of protecting the system from overheating and/or activating the heating element. These items have a tendency to fail because of the harsh environment they are exposed to. When removing the wires from the thermal limiter it is wise to mark their location to assure you connect the replacement part correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4-inch section of painter's tape for each wire. Wrap the tape around each wire so there is ample space to write on it.

    • 2

Record the location of each wire on the tape with a pen. Use a system you will understand when installing the replacement part. For example, the commonly used indicators are: top, center, bottom or left and right.

    • 3

Unplug the appliance from its electrical outlet or disconnect the vehicle's battery by pulling off the battery terminals. Allow the appliance to rest for 60 seconds to ensure there is no power in its wires.

    • 4

Remove each wire from its terminal by pulling it away from the thermal limiter with your hand. If the wire's are soldered on, cut the wires about two inches from the thermal limiter with wire cutters.
