My Freezer Fan Stopped When It Was Defrosted

Most freezers self-defrost. When the freezer gets too cold, the thermostat causes the timer to advance to defrost mode. The freezer fan then turns off and the freezer defrosts. When the temperature drops sufficiently, the thermostat triggers the timer to go back to freeze mode and the fan turns back on. If your fan doesn't turn on at some point, you either have a problem in your defrost timer or your thermostat.

Look for your freezer's timer. The timer may be behind the compressor or thermostat. Check your owner's manual for the exact location.

Turn the dial on the timer clockwise with a flathead screwdriver. Turn until you hear a click and see if the fan comes on. Keep turning the timer dial until you hear another click and see if the fan goes on or off. If the fan is working normally now, close the freezer and just keep an eye on whether the fan is continuing to work properly.

Find your thermostat. Jump start the thermostat by putting a jumper wire between the two wires going to the thermostat and turning on the power to the jumper wire. If this starts the fan, the problem is in your thermostat and you should have it replaced. If this doesn't work, replace your defrost timer.
