What Will Cause the Oven Not to Work If I Have a Gas Cooker and Electric Oven?

If your igniter doesn't work properly, your oven won't turn on when you set it to bake. Most gas stoves have an electric igniter, so there could be several causes of igniter failure. A problem with your electric supply to the igniter could cause the igniter not to fire when you turn the stove on. You may also have a problem with the gas flow to the stove, due to the igniter, the thermostat or the gas valve.
  1. Simple Electrical Problems

    • Your oven won't work if the plug is loose or has been unplugged. Always check this before performing any more complicated troubleshooting. In addition, check that the timer on your oven is set correctly. If the time cook function is set incorrectly, the oven won't turn on. Reset this function to see if that gets the oven to turn on. Refer to your owner's manual for directions on how to reset the function.

    Burnt-Out Fuse

    • One common cause of igniter failure is a burnt-out fuse in the oven. Many ranges have a fuse under the cooktop, but location of the fuse varies by model, so you should check your owner's manual to find out where the fuse is located. Unplug the oven, and remove the fuse. If it looks brown or rusted, it is burnt out. Replace it with a new fuse, which you can buy at an appliance parts store. Then, plug the oven back in so that you can test it.

    Pilot Light

    • If the pilot light goes out in your oven, heat won't flow to the oven or to the stove. Open your oven door, and turn on the oven. You should see the pilot light expand. If you don't see the pilot light at all, the pilot has gone out and needs to be relit. Consult your owner's manual or a technician to learn how to relight your pilot. If the pilot light is on but doesn't expand, you have a problem with the gas valve or thermocouple. These problems require the assistance of a technician.

    Dirty Pilot or Igniter

    • A dirty pilot or igniter will cause the oven not to work properly. Unplug the stove, and then open the top of your stove to clean these items. Clean the pilot with a needle, and brush away any leftover debris with a toothbrush. You can also use the toothbrush to clean the igniter. After performing these steps, close the stove, plug it back in and try it again to see if it works.
