How to Troubleshoot a Gas Furnace With a Loud Explosion

If your gas furnace makes a booming or exploding noise when you first turn it on, gas is building up in the furnace before it lights. There are a number of possible causes for this kind of problem. The pilot light, burners and igniter may all contribute to gas buildup. You can troubleshoot a few things yourself, although you should always call a service technician if you have concerns about your gas appliances to avoid the risk of explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the furnace and note when you hear the exploding sound. Turn the furnace off as soon as you hear the sound.

    • 2

Check the pilot to see if it is lit. If it isn't lit, inspect the pilot tubing for cracks and tears.

    • 3

Vacuum the burner tops and nearby areas to remove any dust and debris that may be clogging the burners. Inspect the burner chambers for rust, cracks or tears.

    • 4

Examine the igniter. Check to make sure the igniter hasn't moved out of position. Clean any dirt or rust off the igniter.

    • 5

Call your service technician if you see soot around the burners or if the problem continues after following these steps.
