Tools Needed to Remove the Clutch From a Homelite Chainsaw

Chainsaws are very dangerous tools that should always be in the best condition to ensure you don’t get hurt when using them. If you notice that your machine isn’t working properly, stop using it immediately and take it apart to discover the problem. The clutch is the mechanism that connects the motor to the chain and operates the machine. Don’t use the wrong tools to remove the clutch as you could damage it in the process.
  1. Combination Wrench

    • Homelite chainsaws come with a combination wrench that fits over the nuts that hold the clutch cover in place. Remove the nut by fitting the wrench over it and twisting counter-clockwise to loosen then remove it. Removing these nuts will allow you to remove the cover and access the clutch. If you’ve lost the combination wrench, you can purchase a replacement from Homelite or obtain the right-sized wrench from a hardware store.

    Screwdrivers

    • Depending on your model, the clutch may be held in place with several screws. These screws can be easily removable with a flat head screwdriver. Use force to remove any old screws that are rusted and corroded. Aside from removing the clutch, screwdrivers will also enable you to tighten the chain as well as other components on the chainsaw.

    Soft-Bristled Brush

    • Use a soft-bristled brush to clean any dust and other debris off of the clutch once you remove it. Brush the entire surface of the clutch over a garbage can so the dirt and debris don’t fall on your floor. Do not use a stiff-bristled brush as it can scratch the clutch.

    Work Gloves

    • Always wear work gloves whenever handling and operating a chainsaw and when performing any maintenance. This is important even if the machine is off and the chain isn’t moving. The chain is very sharp and can easily cut your hands if it slips or if you grasp it too hard.
