How to Fix a Rumbling Dryer Motor

A rumbling dryer motor may simply mean that the dryer needs maintenance. The driver motor turns the clothes drum and switches on the heating element. It also powers the blower fan that pushes hot air over the clothes and out the vent. A dryer under warranty should be fixed by an authorized repair person so that the warranty is not voided. However, you may be able to resolve the rumbling problem yourself if the dryer is no longer under warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the dryer by closing the door and pressing "Start." Let the dryer run for a few minutes. If the rumbling noise disappears after a few minutes, the noise may have been caused by not using the dryer for an extended period of time.

    • 2

If the rumbling continues, stop the dryer and unplug it. Remove the dryer front, bulkhead and drum with a screwdriver so you can clearly see the driver motor. Place all screws in a small dish and set them aside. Clean the motor and areas around it with a lint brush to remove any debris.

Check the motor for worn parts and replace them. Refer to the owner's manual for machine oil recommendations and for any parts that should be oiled. Lubricate any recommended moving motor parts with machine oil.

Remove the blower wheel housing connected to the motor with a screwdriver. Examine the blower wheel and housing for signs of damage and replace them if necessary. Reconnect the blower wheel housing to the motor.

Reassemble the dryer drum, the bulkhead and the dryer front with a screwdriver. Close the dryer door, and push "Start" to initiate the drying cycle. Listen for any further rumbling noises.
