Frigidaire Dishwasher Door Flies Open When Running

Frigidaire dishwashers use an electronic latching system keeping the dishwasher closed while it's running. However, sometimes a door spring breaks, causing the dishwasher to fly open midcycle. This is dangerous. Don't run your dishwasher until you fix the problem. You can replace door springs yourself and purchase the parts online.
  1. Broken Door Spring

    • If one of the two door springs breaks, the latch fails and the Frigidaire dishwasher door flies open while the dishwasher is running. Usually only one spring is to blame. However, you should replace both springs at the same time so that the other spring doesn't wear out soon after the initial repair.

    Door Latch

    • It's not likely that the problem is with the door latch itself rather than with the springs. Frigidaire dishwashers use an electronic latch. Sensors in the latch must confirm that the door is closed and latched before the dishwasher runs. Thus, if the dishwasher is running but won't stay closed, the problem is probably the door spring.

    Alignment Issue

    • Check whether the door latch is properly aligned. If the latch is out of position, it registers as "closed" when you shut the door, but the latch isn’t secure enough to keep the door closed because it's off-center. Fix this problem yourself by removing the inner door panel and door-latch assembly, moving the assembly over, and reassembling it. This process takes trial and error. If you're not sure whether the latch is aligned or not, call a service technician.

    Warnings

    • Always disconnect power from the dishwasher before performing any troubleshooting steps. If you aren't comfortable working on the dishwasher yourself, call a service technician to check your dishwasher. Although service calls are expensive, it's better to let someone who knows what he is doing work on the machine to avoid potential injury.
