How to Replace the Oven Ignitor in a Maytag Range

Maytag gas ranges have two ignitors inside the oven compartment, one on each burner. The ignitors are energized by the electronic oven control, and are used to ignite the gas emitted from the active burner. If the ignitor fails, you cannot use the burner until the ignitor is replaced. The ignitor is secured using mounting screws, and requires only a slight disassembly of the oven to replace. Before disassembling the oven, ensure that it is disconnected from its power source.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off of the oven breaker in your home's service panel prior to beginning the repair.

    • 2

Open the oven door, and then remove the oven racks. To remove the racks, slide them straight out until they stop, then lift the rack and pull it out of the oven.

    • 3

Remove the oven door by first moving the hinge locks, located on each door hinge, toward the oven to unlock the door. If the hinge lock is difficult to move, use a flat-head screwdriver to apply added leverage to the lock. Close the door completely, and then grasp the door by the sides with both hands. Apply inward pressure on the top of the door and outward pressure on the bottom of the door until the hinges are removed from the oven. Set the door aside.

    • 4

Remove the bottom panel of the oven, if replacing the bake ignitor, which is located on the bottom of the oven. The bottom panel is secured using thumb screws, located on the rear of the panel. Lift the panel out of the oven and remove.

    • 5

Remove the screws securing the burner baffle assembly, also known as the burner shield. The burner shield is a flat panel that covers the burner, ensuring that the heat from the burner is evenly spread. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws securing the burner shield, and then remove the shield from the oven.

    • 6

Remove the screws securing the ignitor to the side of the burner or to the oven, depending on the model of your Maytag oven. Pull the ignitor away from the rear wall of the oven.

    • 7

Depress the tab on the wire connector, and then disconnect the ignitor wire connector. Remove and discard the old ignitor.

    • 8

Connect the new ignitor's wire connector, and then tuck the wires through the hole from which the protrude on the rear of the oven.

    • 9

Secure the new ignitor to the oven or burner using the screws that were removed.

    • 10

Reinstall the burner shield, bottom panel (if applicable), oven door and oven racks by reversing the steps taken to remove each component.

    • 11

      Restore power to the oven.
