My Frigidaire Limited Washer Has a Burning Rubber Smell From the Tub

A burning rubber smell from the tub could indicate a problem with the belt on a Frigidaire Limited washer. The only way to be certain is to inspect the belt’s condition. Until you can confirm that the smell is not coming from a defective washer component and not something placed in your washer, stop using the machine. Otherwise, you run the risk of causing further damage to your washer.
  1. Over-Loaded Washtub

    • The more laundry you place in your Frigidaire Limited washer, the more the belt has to stretch to turn the tub. If the belt becomes over-stretched, it can give off a burning rubber smell. The smell usually fades not long after the wash cycle ends, and unless you run unusually large loads all the time; the belt is probably fine and will resume its normal shape. Do not overfill the tub to avoid straining the belt. Wash bulkier items, such as comforters, dog beds and drapery, at a laundromat that has an industrial washing machine.

    Worn Belt

    • A belt that becomes stretched out over time can slip or break, which makes a washer’s tub smell like burnt rubber. If these problems occur, the washer might also make a squealing noise or you might hear a flapping sound from a torn belt hitting the sides of the cabinet. Additionally, you might notice that the tub’s movements become more erratic before it finally comes to a grinding halt. The Limited washer cannot perform a routine wash cycle with a damaged belt. Contact Frigidaire to replace it.

    Shorted Motor

    • Although you might detect a burning rubber smell from a washer’s tub, the odor might actually be coming from the motor underneath it. If the motor on a Frigidaire Limited washer short circuits, it might elicit a smell that is similar to burnt rubber. Contact Frigidaire to schedule a service appointment. A technician will assess the motor and ensure that it is not in disrepair.

    Too Many Chemicals

    • Using too much soap or chemicals in your Frigidaire Limited washer could give the outer tub a burned rubber smell, according to Appliance Aid. This problem usually happens when you put in more detergent than needed for a particular wash load size and then do not use your washer again for several days, which can cause a foul-smelling residue to form in the tub. Pour a mixture of 2 cups each of dish detergent and bleach into your washer. Run an empty wash cycle on the hot water setting. Open the washer’s lid after it completes the agitation cycle to allow time for the solution to penetrate the residue and eliminate the odor. After about 15 minutes, close the lid to restart the cycle. Wash a load of whites next to make certain all of the bleach is gone prior to washing a load with colored fabrics.
