How to Fix a Whirlpool Washer Control Lock

An error with your Whirlpool washer's main control board affects features of the appliance and can cause unexpected behavior, including a stuck control lock setting. A force drain unlocks the washer door by removing water from the drum; however, if the washer remains in the stuck setting, a power cycle is necessary to reset the washer's main control board and unlock the door. Contact the Whirlpool support line if the door remains unresponsive, because forcing the door open causes permanent damage that breaks the door's latch and may void your washer's warranty.

Instructions

    • 1

Push "Pause/Cancel" two times to force the end of the cycle and unplug the washer's power cord from its power outlet.

    • 2

Leave the washer unplugged for one minute, and reconnect the washer cable to the power outlet.

    • 3

Push "Control Lock" on the front of the washer's control display for three seconds and release the button.

    • 4

Turn the cycle knob to "Drain/Spin" and tap "Power" to power on the washer. The door unlocks once the water is cleared out of the washer.
