How to Replace a Frigidaire Refrigerator Ice Maker Solenoid

The ice maker solenoid in a Frigidaire refrigerator is located inside the appliance immediately behind the access panel on the rear where the water hose connects to the valve. The solenoid controls when the valve opens and shuts to release or stop the flow of water to the ice maker. If the solenoid is defective, the valve won't operate properly, and water may not reach the ice maker. Replacing the solenoid and valve assembly takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the knob in the valve on the water hose clockwise until tight. The valve typically is located below the sink but may be installed behind the Frigidaire.

    • 2

Disconnect the Frigidaire power cord from the wall.

    • 3

Turn the refrigerator to reach the rear service panel where the hose enters the Frigidaire.

    • 4

Remove the bolts in the panel with the nut driver to take off the panel

    • 5

Unscrew the hose from the valve inside the refrigerator using the adjustable wrench. Place the end of the hose in the bucket to catch any spills.

    • 6

Use the screwdriver to remove the screw in the bracket on the valve assembly where it attaches to the Frigidaire frame. Set the screw and bracket aside.

    • 7

Squeeze the clamp on the valve hose with pliers to pull off the hose.

    • 8

Pull the two wired connectors off the solenoid above the valve. The component now can be removed from the appliance.

    • 9

Slide the two wires onto the solenoid contacts on the new valve assembly.

    • 10

Push the hose onto the valve pipe, and squeeze the clamp with pliers to slide it over the hose where it's now attached to the valve pipe. Releasing the pliers locks the clamp.

    • 11

Attach the new solenoid and valve assembly to the frame of the Frigidaire with the bracket and screw removed earlier.

    • 12

Connect the water hose to the intake on the new valve and tighten with the adjustable wrench.

    • 13

Attach the cover plate to the back of the Frigidiare with the bolts and nut driver.

    • 14

Unscrew the knob on the water-supply hose, and dry your hands.

    • 15

Reconnect the Frigidaire power cord to the wall outlet.
