How to Change an Oven Temperature Sensor on a GE Profile JTP25

The temperature sensor in your oven sends a signal to your oven’s control panel to turn the baking elements on or off to maintain the cooking temperature you selected. A broken sensor could result in undercooked or overcooked foods. When the F3 or F4 error code appears on your GE Profile oven’s control panel display, the oven temperature sensor has failed and needs to be changed. The F2 error code may also appear during baking or cleaning and could indicate the sensor needs replacing.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the oven’s 20- or 30-amp double-pole breaker inside your home’s main electrical circuit panel. Turn the breaker to the “Off” position. Tape the breaker in the "Off" position and place a note on your panel informing your family that you are working on the electricity.

    • 2

Open the GE Profile oven door. Grasp the hinge locks that cover the hinges of the door with your fingers. Pull up on each hinge lock to lift it off the hinge. Grab the oven door in both hands and lift it up and off the hinges. Set the GE Profile oven door aside.

    • 3

Look inside the oven for the temperature sensor. It appears as a small metal rod protruding out from the top corner of the oven’s back wall. Remove the two screws holding the sensor to the back wall.

    • 4

Grab the metal rod of the sensor and carefully pull it from the oven wall. Continue to pull the wires connected to the temperature sensor through the small opening until the plastic wiring harness appears inside the oven.

    • 5

Squeeze the clip on the side of the harness to pull the two ends of the harness apart.

    • 6

Compare the ends of the two wiring harnesses attached to the temperature sensors, the replacement and the original. Use one of the wiring harness adaptors that came with the replacement sensor to match the original wiring harness if necessary. The adaptor consists of a short wire with harness adaptors on both ends; simply connect the adapter to the end of the replacement sensor’s harness.

    • 7

Plug the replacement sensor wiring harness into the wiring harness hanging from the opening in the oven wall. Carefully push the wires and the harness back through the opening.

    • 8

Attach the new temperature sensor with the two screws you removed from the original sensor.

    • 9

Install the oven door back onto its hinges. Close the hinge locks over the hinges.

    • 10

Remove the tape from the double-pole breaker and flip it back to the “On” position.
