How to Troubleshoot a Frigidaire Refrigerator Water Valve

The water valve inside the bottom rear of a Frigidaire refrigerator regulates the flow of water to the ice maker and to a water dispenser on some models. Sensors in the Frigidaire send signals to the valve solenoid when water is needed. The valve then opens or shuts in response to an electrical pulse from the ice maker or the water dispenser. If water does not flow to the ice maker or dispenser, try troubleshooting the valve.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord behind the Frigidaire where it connects to the wall.

    • 2

Pull the refrigerator forward to look behind the appliance on the floor for signs of a leak that might indicate a loose connection or defective valve.

    • 3

Place the nut driver over each of the bolts in the cover panel and turn them counterclockwise to remove them. Pull off the panel and move it along the line away from the Frigidaire.

    • 4

Blot the valve with folded paper towels to check for small leaks. If the valve is wet, continue troubleshooting.

    • 5

Tighten the rotating coupler on the end of the line where it attaches to the valve intake, using the wrench. Dry the valve with paper towels to determine if the leak is fixed. If the valve still leaks, an internal seal may be broken and the unit must be replaced. Continue troubleshooting.

    • 6

Slide off the two wires attached to the top of the valve, pulling on the connector at the end of each wire.

    • 7

Dial the multi-tester to check ohms. Place the two testers on the end of the multi-tester on the two contacts at the top of the valve. A reading of 200 to 500 is normal. A zero reading indicates the valve assembly is defective. Buy a new part from Frigidaire or an appliance repair shop.
