How to Check the Pump on a GE Profile Harmony

The GE Profile Harmony is a washing machine that uses a powered pump to drain the laundry tub prior to the start of a spin cycle. Checking the pump is the first place to start troubleshooting if the GE washer will not drain. The problem may be as simple as a clog in the drain tube or could involve a malfunction in the pump itself. Troubleshooting the washer pump typically takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washer's power cord from the wall.

    • 2

Unscrew the two hoses on the back of the Profile with the pliers and lower each hose into a bucket.

    • 3

Squeeze the clamp on the drain hose where it connects to the Profile Harmony. Pull off the hose.

    • 4

Unscrew and remove the rear panel from the appliance, using the screwdriver. Locate the pump mounted on a bracket near the outlet for the drain hose.

    • 5

Squeeze the clamp on the pump with the pliers to pull off the rubber hose. A small amount of water may spill from the pump and hose.

    • 6

Unplug the wires from the pump, pulling on the nylon plug where it connects to the pump's electrical socket.

    • 7

Set a multimeter to test for circuit continuity, which is measured in ohms.

    • 8

Hold the two probes on the meter to the two electrical contacts in the pump's power socket. If the meter display reads zero, the pump is defective.

    • 9

Remove the screws holding the pump to the bracket to release the part. Take the part to an appliance parts store for a replacement.
