How to Replace a Valve in a Frigidaire Refrigerator

Frigidaire refrigerators with an icemaker operate with a valve and internal plumbing to release water to the component for making ice. As you use the icemaker and the quantity of ice is reduced in the bin inside the freezer, the icemaker signals the valve, which opens to let in water from a supply tube connected from the Frigidaire to the household plumbing. If the valve or the attached solenoid wears out, the entire part must be replaced for water to flow properly. Refrigerator valves can also develop leaks over time, requiring replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the knob on the supply tube valve to the right as far as it will turn. The valve may be at the back of the Frigidaire or below the kitchen sink.

    • 2

Unplug the Frigidaire power cord. Pull the appliance forward with a friend's help, if necessary, to reach the back.

    • 3

Extract the hex bolts holding the service cover to the rear of the refrigerator, using the nut driver. Pull off the cover and save the bolts.

    • 4

Twist the rounded nut on the end of the supply tube to the left where the tube attaches to the valve inside the Frigidaire, using the adjustable wrench. Lower the tube end into a bucket to prevent water from leaking onto the floor.

    • 5

Pull the wires off the electrical posts on the top of the valve, holding each wire by its metal clip. There are two wires for the circuit to the icemaker and another pair of wires if the Frigidaire model also has a water dispenser. Make a note of the wire pairs and where they attach so you can reconnect them later.

    • 6

Take out the bolt in the steel bracket that holds the valve to the cabinet inside the Frigidaire. Remove the old valve.

    • 7

Fasten the new valve to the steel bracket using the bolt and nut driver.

    • 8

Clip the two or four wires, depending on your model, to the posts on the top of the valve.

    • 9

Connect the supply tube coupler to the threaded pipe on the new valve and tighten with the adjustable wrench.

    • 10

Fasten the cover plate to the back of the Frigidaire with the bolts.

    • 11

Unscrew the valve knob in the supply tube to let water flow to the refrigerator.

    • 12

Plug in the Frigidaire power cord and push the appliance carefully to its original spot.
