Troubleshooting a Kenmore Electric Oven From Sears That Will Not Stay On

Using an electric oven and range is a useful alternative for those homes that are not in areas with access to natural gas. But like all electrical appliances, an electric oven such as those manufactured by Kenmore will occasionally encounter technical problems such as intermittently losing power. You need to know how to troubleshoot these problems on your own, before needing to contact a Kenmore service representative, so that you can restore full functionality to your oven.
  1. Household Electrical Problems

    • A good place to start when troubleshooting an oven is determining whether it has electricity going into it. First, check the breaker for the circuit that the oven uses to see whether it has been tripped. If the oven is tripping the breaker every time you use it, the problem could be with the electrical wiring for that specific circuit, and not with the oven itself. If you continually need to flip the breaker back on every time you use the oven, you will need to have an electrician examine that circuit in your home's electrical system.

    Electrical Cord

    • Another common cause of intermittent power failure in a Kenmore electric oven has to do with the power cord. If the oven's power cord is unplugged, the oven won't operate, but if the power cord is slightly loose or dislodged from the electrical outlet, the oven could intermittently lose power. If the power cord is plugged in completely, check the cord itself for any signs of damage. If the cord is damaged in any way, replace it.

    Oven Settings

    • Kenmore electric ovens have two settings that temporarily disable oven settings if they are activated. Check the oven's clock display to see whether it displays "LOC" when you try to use the oven. If it does, deactivate the oven lock feature by holding the "CLEAR/OFF" button for three seconds until you hear a beep. If the clock display shows "Sd" or "dddd" instead, press and hold the "BAKE TIME" button for six seconds to exit sales demo mode. Test the oven functions again after verifying these settings to see whether it is working normally.

    Contacting Kenmore

    • If none of the above troubleshooting steps restore the oven, contact Kenmore customer support. In the failure of these simple remedies for intermittent power failure, the problem is likely one that will need to be handled by a Kenmore support representative. It is important to contact Kenmore rather than another repair service in case the necessary repairs are covered under the oven's manufacturer's warranty.
