How to Remove a Washer Tub Cone Nut

A combination of nuts, bolts and washers keeps the various parts of your washing machine intact. At the center of the machine lies the tub. A cone nut, threaded onto the drive shaft, holds the tub in place. Removing the tub, either for replacement or to gain access to one of the tub fittings, necessitates removing the cone nut first. Removal of the nut requires a wrench designed specifically for the job. Using this wrench, combined with other necessary tools, prevents damage to the nut or the tub agitator.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket wrench extension (optional)
  • Tub nut spanner wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Open your washer lid to reveal the agitator in the center of the tub. Some models include a rinse dispenser on the head of the agitator. To remove the dispenser, either twist it to the left or lift the lock ring beneath. If no dispenser is present, remove the cap from the head of the agitator.

    • 2

Remove the dust cap inside the agitator. Not all models include this feature. The cap resembles a smooth plate. Beneath the cap lies the agitator bolt and washer.

    • 3

Attach a proper-sized socket to the head of the bolt. If necessary, use an extension on your socket wrench to access the bolt.

    • 4

Hold the base of the agitator. Turn the agitator bolt counterclockwise, and remove the loosened bolt and washer from inside the agitator.

    • 5

Lift the agitator out of the tub. Removing the agitator reveals the tub nut in the bottom of the tub.

    • 6

Match the tub nut wrench to the grooves on the sides of the tub nut. Strike the side of the wrench with a hammer in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the loosened nut.
