How to Check Magic Chef Ignition Switches

Magic Chef ranges and cooktops use ignition switches along the top of the console to control the various burners on the appliance surface. The ignition switch connects to the gas igniter, which heats quickly when the switch is activated. At a certain temperature, the igniter signals the gas valve, which opens to light the burner. If the switch stops working, the burner connected to it will not light. Testing an ignition switch involves a simple check with an ohmmeter.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist all the controls on the Magic Chef to the "Off" position and wait for the appliance to reach room temperature.

    • 2

Shut off the gas valve in the pipe connected to the Magic Chef, then unplug the electrical cord that provides power for the ignition.

    • 3

Take out the screws below the top front edge of the Magic Chef and pull off the metal bar held in place by the screws.

    • 4

Pry up the front corners of the appliance with a putty knife.

    • 5

Raise the Magic Chef top while wearing work gloves to protect your hands. Support the top at an angle with a sturdy wooden dowel.

    • 6

Slide off the two wires attached to the switch on the underside of the Magic Chef. The switch is connected directly below the control knob. Note which wire connects to which contact on the switch.

    • 7

Clip the two ohmmeter test wands to the two switch contacts.

    • 8

Push in the control knob on the Magic Chef surface for the switch being tested. Turn the knob clockwise to any setting. If the ohmmeter display remains at zero, the switch is defective.
