How to Replace a Smooth Stovetop Coil

Smooth stovetops use radiant heat reflected from electrical coils plugged in below the surface. The smooth surface is popular for its appearance as well as the relative ease of cleaning up spills. When a heating coil burns out, buy a replacement from the manufacturer or an appliance repair store. Many home improvement stores also carry the coils. Replacing the part takes less than half an hour using simple tools. Beware of sharp edges on the underside of the stovetop.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off electricity to the stove at the circuit breaker so you do not have to move the appliance to access the power cord.

    • 2

Open the door to the horizontal position.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the screws on the top edge of the door frame below the smooth stovetop.

    • 4

Wear work gloves to lift the stovetop with both hands. Hold the stovetop upright with the metal rod as if you are propping up an automobile hood.

    • 5

Extract the screws from the metal cup covering the coil to be replaced. Take off the cup and place the hardware inside so it cannot roll off the counter and get lost.

    • 6

Hold the coil with one hand and the socket connected to the coil with your other hand. Unplug the coil by pulling straight back.

    • 7

Push the new coil firmly into the socket so the two terminals on the coil seat inside the socket.

    • 8

Reattach the metal cup with the screws.

    • 9

Wear work gloves to remove the metal rod and set the stovetop back in place, lowering it with both hands.

    • 10

Secure the stovetop to the front of the cabinet with screws through the underside of the door frame.

    • 11

Close the stove door before switching on the electricity at the breaker box.
