How to Change the Halogen Speed-Cook Bulb on a GE Advantium

The GE Advantium oven is a wall unit that is installed over a range or set into the wall like a traditional wall oven. The unit has two halogen bulbs. One is used on the outside of ovens installed above a range. There, the bulb serves as a light for range-top cooking. The interior light is the one used in the speed-cook process. When that light is blown, you should not throw away the GE Advantium oven; instead, change the bulb yourself.

Instructions

  1. Under-the-Cabinet Ovens

    • 1

Unscrew the vent from the microwave and the shelf, using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Find the two screws on top of the oven, in the area in front of the cabinet door. You may need to open the cabinet to get to the screws. Set the screws on the cookie sheet or tray.

    • 2

Take the vent off the oven. It is flush to the oven and may need a little tug to remove.

    • 3

Remove the three screws holding the silver-colored plate down onto the oven with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Two of the screws hold the plate and cover in place. The cover looks like a grate. Behind it, you can see the electrical components.

    • 4

Lift the plate and reach down into the cavity to lift out a metal bracket that holds the halogen bulb. You will have to look into the GE Advantium oven from the top to see the bulb, as it isn't visible from eye level.

    • 5

Pull up on the bulb to remove it. Push the new one down into the socket. Set the metal plate containing the halogen bulb back into place. Lay the plate down and gently put the grate/cover into place.

    • 6

Screw in the three screws holding the plate and grate into place. Push the vent back into place so that it is flush against the top of the oven. Screw in the two screws that hold the vent in place.

    Wall-Mounted Advantium Ovens

    • 7

Open the oven and take out the racks, along with any glass turntables and other accessories. Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to remove four screws from the front of the oven, along the oven's trim. Place them on the cookie sheet or tray.

    • 8

Have a friend help you lift the oven out of the wall. Slide it out carefully. Place it on a sturdy surface.

    • 9

Remove the two screws holding the top access cover onto the oven. Lift off the access cover and put it aside. Place the screws on your cookie sheet or tray. Locate two screws that the GE Advantium manual describes as recessed on the top front of the oven. Remove them and place them on the tray.

    • 10

Open the door of the oven. Hold the top and bottom of the control panel and lift to remove. Look for the lamp housing. It is a metal bracket that holds the halogen lamp.

    • 11

Detach the housing using a long magnetic Phillips-head screwdriver. The GE Advantium manual suggests placing the screwdriver through the recessed hole in the top of the oven. Gently lift out the screw to remove the housing.

    • 12

Change the bulb and replace the housing into the cavity. Use the long magnetic Phillips-head screwdriver to put the screw into place. Screw it in. Place the control panel onto the four tabs on the oven and push it into place.

    • 13

Re-place the screws into the recessed top of the oven. Place the access panel on and screw it back into place. Place the oven back into the wall and screw in the four panel screws
