How to Replace the Belt on a Rug Doctor

The Rug Doctor is a brand of carpet shampooer and vacuum that uses a drive belt and electric motor to spin the agitator brush at the bottom. The rubber belt can stretch and wear out over time, causing the brush to slip or stop spinning. Buy a replacement belt from Rug Doctor Inc. or an appliance parts store and replace it in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Rug Doctor power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Unscrew and take off the nozzle control knob on the front of the Rug Doctor hood.

    • 3

Turn over the Rug Doctor and insert the edge of a flat-blade screwdriver into each of the four slots marked with arrows, one at a time, on the bottom of the appliance. Pop the latch in each slot by using the screwdriver as a lever.

    • 4

Turn the Rug Doctor right side up and remove the front hood. Slide the old belt off the motor spindle, which has a grooved wheel on the end.

    • 5

Turn the Rug Doctor upside down once the belt is disengaged from the motor. This releases tension on the agitator brush, which can now be pulled out of the cams on the left and right side. Pull the old belt out of the bottom of the Rug Doctor.

    • 6

Slide the agitator brush through the new belt and reinstall the brush in the cams on the left and right.

    • 7

Turn the Rug doctor upright and pull the new belt over the motor wheel.

    • 8

Replace the hood and attach the nozzle control knob.

    • 9

Set the bottom plate in place on the slots under the Rug Doctor and snap the plate into the locked position.
