How to Change the Torsion Spring in a Microwave Oven

Your microwave oven must close securely to engage the door switch. Should your door fail to close correctly, the microwave will fail to operate. Some built-in microwave convection ovens open like a traditional oven and utilize torsion springs to keep the door closed. Heavy use of your microwave or sitting too much weight on the open door can break one or both of the torsion springs attached to the door and hinges. You must replace the springs for your microwave oven to continue to operate.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the electricity to your microwave oven.

    • 2

Open the microwave oven door to access the two screws on the inside of the door near the top. Hold the microwave door securely by the handle and remove the screws.

    • 3

Pull the handle on the microwave door toward you and away from the hinge. This will release the exterior door from the microwave. Set the exterior door aside. Close the interior microwave oven door.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the vent cover to the bottom of the microwave. Pull the vent cover off the microwave to expose the screws holding the interior microwave to the microwave oven frame.

    • 5

Remove the two screws from the brackets beneath the vent on the left and right side of the microwave. Wiggle the interior microwave out of the oven frame, about 1 inch, to expose the bottom of the microwave oven door.

    • 6

Remove the two screws from the bottom of the microwave oven door. Carefully remove the plastic interior door frame from the inside of the microwave oven door. Carefully shut the microwave door to expose the two bottom door hinges and the torsion springs.

    • 7

Unhook the torsion spring from the top of the left hinge and the bottom of the right hinge. Unhook the remaining torsion spring from the top of the right hinge and the bottom of the left hinge.

    • 8

Install the new torsion springs into the hinges: left top to bottom right and right top to bottom left, crisscrossing the springs between the two hinges.

    • 9

Reassemble your microwave oven by reversing the disassembly steps.
