DIY Washing Machine Valve Replacement

The valve in a washing machine consists of two inlets for hot and cold water, as well as a solenoid that signals the valve when to open and close, as well as which water inlet to use. When you set the temperature control to hot, only the hot water inlet opens to fill the tub. At the medium setting, both inlets open to mix hot and cold water for a moderate temperature. Replacement valves are available either from the manufacturer or an appliance parts store.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the washing machine at the end of the cycle and unplug the appliance power cord. Twist the two knobs on the faucets behind the washer clockwise to halt the flow of water.

    • 2

Unscrew the fill hoses from the back of the appliance using pliers. Lower each hose into the bucket to drain excess water.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the metal panel surrounding the two inlet pipes on the washer where the hoses were connected. The inlets are part of the valve assembly.

    • 4

Use pliers to press the tabs on the clamp around the hose connected to the valve. This releases pressure on the clamp for pulling the hose off the valve. A small amount of water may drip from the hose.

    • 5

Disconnect the pair of wires attached to the top of the valve. Each wire terminates in a clip that slides off the electrical contact.

    • 6

Remove the screws holding the valve assembly to the bracket inside the washer cabinet, using a screwdriver. Take out the old valve.

    • 7

Hold the new valve in position and secure it to the bracket with the screws.

    • 8

Slide the clips on the two wires onto their respective contacts at the top of the valve.

    • 9

Push the hose and clamp onto the outlet on the valve at the side or bottom, depending on your model. Squeeze the clamp to slide on the hose and lock it in place.

    • 10

Replace the metal plate over the two inlets on the new valve and secure with screws.

    • 11

Connect the fill hoses to the new inlets and tighten with pliers.

    • 12

Turn the faucet knobs counter-clockwise to release water through the fill hoses.

    • 13

Plug in the washing machine's power cord.
