Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent the mower from accidentally starting while you're performing the repairs.
Remove the gas cap and cover the fuel tank opening with a plastic bag to prevent fuel spills during the pulley removal process. Replace and tighten the gas cap.
Turn the mower onto its side to access the blade, belt and pulley components. Make sure to use a level work surface to prevent the mower from tipping over.
Locate the idler on the bottom of the mower. Pull the idler to the right to release the tension on the drive belt. Unhook the drive belt from the engine pulley at the center of the mower blade and remove it from the drive sheave. Set the removed belt aside.
Remove the bolt at the center of the engine pulley, using an open-end wrench. Insert the tip of a small flat-head screwdriver under the edge of the lock washer and gently pry the washer away from the pulley. Reserve the removed components for reassembly.
Slide the lock washer and engine pulley off of the engine shaft.
