How to Replace the Glow Plug in a Whirlpool Duet

Whirlpool Duet series gas dryers are super-capacity residential appliances with multiple drying cycles and temperature options. Whirlpool Duet gas dryers use glow plug-style igniters to ignite the gas used to warm the air that is then used to dry your clothing. When the glow plug igniter malfunctions or fails, the dryer may run but not produce the heat necessary to dry clothes efficiently, requiring the igniter's replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • Hex-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer's electrical cord from the grounded wall outlet. Close the gas valve that supplies the gas to the appliance; this valve is usually attached to the gas supply line behind the dryer.

    • 2

Remove the Phillips screws at the bottom of the toe access panel; the number of screws varies by Duet model. Pull the bottom of the panel toward you, then down, to remove the panel from the dryer cabinet.

    • 3

Locate the gas burner assembly in the bottom right-hand corner of the dryer cabinet. Remove the hex-head screw securing the gas burner shield to the assembly.

    • 4

Disconnect the glow plug igniter wires from the gas burner assembly. Pull the connector with a pair of needle-nose pliers to detach the wires from their terminal; do not pull the wires themselves.

    • 5

Remove the Phillips screw securing the igniter to the gas burner assembly. Reserve the removed screw for reassembly.

    • 6

Line up the screw hole on the replacement igniter bracket with the screw hole on the gas burner assembly. Reinsert and tighten the reserved retaining screw. Clip the igniter wires to the appropriate terminal.

    • 7

Replace the gas burner shield and reinstall the hex-head screw. Push the toe access panel back into place and reinstall its retaining screws.

    • 8

Open the gas valve and plug the appliance back in.
