How to Replace a Stem Seal on a Maytag Neptune Washer

The Maytag Neptune is a high-efficiency, large-capacity residential washing machine that offers 11 washing cycles and five temperature settings. Maytag Neptune washers feature a gentle-wash tumbler assembly instead of a traditional agitator. If you see water leaking from the washer's transmission assembly, the stem seal and sleeve must be replaced. Experienced do-it-yourselfs should have no trouble replacing the faulty seal. Because of the difficulty and length of the stem seal replacement process, those without previous appliance repair experience may wish to call in a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the electrical cord from the grounded wall outlet. Close the hot and cold water supply valves; locate these valves on the wall behind the washer.

    • 2

Slide a putty knife under the top panel and locate the retaining clips securing the panel to the appliance cabinet; these clips line up with the edges of the washer lid. Push in on the retaining clips to release them. Lift the top cover and fold it back.

    • 3

Remove the two screws on the inside of the top edge of the front panel, using a hex-head screwdriver. Pull the top of the front panel forward and lift the panel straight up to clear the retaining clips at the bottom of the cabinet. Remove the screws securing the corner supports to the front of the cabinet, using a six-pointed star screwdriver.

Press down on the outer tub cover while simultaneously lifting the latches around the edges of the cover. Lift the cover off of the tub and set it aside.

    • 5

Rotate the inner wash tub until the arrow on the inside of the tub points to the back of the appliance. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry off the tumbler cap and reveal the inner sleeve screw. Remove the inner tumbler sleeve screw, using the six-pointed star screwdriver. Tip the tumbler assembly toward you and rock it back and forth to free it from the retaining bearing. Turn the assembly upside down and remove it from the tub. Use the six-pointed star screwdriver to remove the six tumbler bearing screws, then lift out the tumbler bearing.

Remove the four transmission mounting bolts and lift the transmission assembly out of the washer tub. Insert a short extension into the empty hole on the spinner support to lock it into place. Remove the six spinner mounting bolts, using an adjustable wrench. Pull the spinner out of the washer.

Squeeze the pinch clamp to disconnect the drain hose from the outer tub. Unplug the wiring harness from the motor and detach the motor harness retaining clip from the side of the outer tub. Disconnect the tub displacement sensor and move it out of the way. Unhook the rear struts from the outer tub and lift the tub from the washer cabinet. Turn the outer tub upside down and place it on a padded surface.

Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the tension bolt on the drive motor. Remove the drive belt from the pulley system. Take out the bolt at the center of the drive pulley to free the pulley from the drive assembly. Set the removed pulley aside. Turn the spinner bolt clockwise to remove it from the spinner shaft, also known as the stem. Lift out the spinner support to reveal the stem seal.

Remove and discard the old stem seal and sleeve. Insert the new sleeve into the new stem seal and press it into place.
