Built-In Glass Top Range Installation

Glass top ranges are smooth and fit easily into modern or contemporary decor. These range tops can be part of a slide in oven or they can be a stand-alone appliance that is built into the countertop. There are several requirements for installing these range tops.
  1. Clearance Requirements

    • Each type of stove or drop-in-stovetop has clearance requirements for installation to ensure the appliance works efficiently without causing a fire hazard. Each model of built-in glass top range will have its own clearance requirements. Most require 30 inches between the stovetop and the bottom of the wood, plastic or metal cabinet. This number can be lowered to 24 inches if the cabinet is protected with a flame retardant heat shield. These stovetops may require 2 inches between the appliance and the wall though some stovetops can go right up to the wall. There should be at least 12 inches between the back of the cooktop and any other appliances. This allows for insulation.

    Separate Power Supply

    • The separate glass top rangetop requires its own power supply that is separate from any other appliances such as an oven, warming drawer or separate broiler appliance. Consult your glass top range manual to determine the specific electrical wiring and voltage requirements for your make and model.

    Hold-Down Brackets

    • No matter what setup you decide to use for your drop-in glasstop range, you need to use a hold down bracket to secure it to your countertop. One side of the bracket is attached to the underside of the cooktop and the other side is attached to the countertop. Use several of these brackets to attach the cooktop and ensure it wont fall into the cabinet or become loose.

    Foam Tape

    • Each glass cooktop has a lip on the edges that overlaps the countertop. Placing foam tape on these lips will help hold the cooktop to the countertop and will prevent food and debris from seeping through it. Don’t let the foam peak out from behind the lip as it will be visible once it is installed.
