How to Repair GE Gas Ranges

Gas ranges offer more versatility and control than an electric oven of the same quality. No matter how expensive and high quality your General Electric gas oven is, it will need to be serviced and repaired eventually. You can make some of these repairs on your own, but should hire a professional if you begin to smell gas leaking out of the range. Check to see if your range is still under warranty. Contact a professional if it is, as attempting to repair the oven yourself can void your warranty.

Instructions

  1. Unclogging Burners

    • 1

Turn off the oven and let it cool completely. Don’t attempt to unclog hot burners. Clogged burners will prevent the burner from heating up.

    • 2

Remove the grates and set them aside. Remove the burner cap and set it aside.

    • 3

Poke a toothpick into each of the holes around the burner base. This will unclog grease, food and other debris from the burner.

    • 4

Add 4 drops liquid dish soap to a cup of lukewarm water. Mix until the water is sudsy.

    • 5

Dip a toothbrush into the soapy water and scrub it over the burner. Pay special attention to the holes around the burner base.

    • 6

Rinse the burner base with water from a damp cloth. Cover the base with the burner cap and place the grates over the stovetop.

    Replacing the Door

    • 7

Turn off the oven and let it cool.

    • 8

      Open the oven door halfway.

    • 9

Grasp the door on either side of the door with both hands. Lift the door straight up until it unlocks from the hinges and then pull it straight out of the oven. Discard the broken door.

    • 10

Hold the replacement door on both sides. Tilt the door at a 45-degree angle. Line the hinge up with the slots on the oven panel. Press the hinge into the oven slots and lower the door.

    Replacing the Light

    • 11

Turn off the oven and let it cool thoroughly. Unplug the oven to disconnect all of the electrical power.

    • 12

Hold you hand under the oven light cover to ensure it doesn’t fall off and break. Press the wire cover holder back to release the cover. Pull the cover off and set it aside.

    • 13

Twist the bulb counterclockwise and throw it away.

    • 14

Twist a replacement bulb into the socket clockwise to tighten it. Don’t touch the bulb with your bare hands. Instead, use a cloth while twisting it to make sure you don’t damage the bulb.

    • 15

Place the cover over the receptacle. Pull the wire cover holder over the cover so it is held tightly in place. The wire cover holder should rest in the depression on the light cover.

    • 16

Plug the oven back in and test the light to ensure it works.

    • 17

Close the door and open it several times to ensure it is seated properly.
