How to Test the Defrost on GE Profile Heaters

The GE Profile is a refrigerator and freezer combo. Like all refrigerators and freezers, the GE Profile has defrost heaters that kick on when the appliance gets too cold every few hours. If you recently fixed your Profile’s motherboard control system, you’ll need to check and make sure the defrost heater is still working before you continue to use your refrigerator. If the heater isn’t working, it could be an electrical issue with the motherboard.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Rubber electrical gloves
  • Alligator clips

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the GE refrigerator away from the wall and remove the motherboard panel in the lower right-hand side.

    • 2

Attach the jumper wires to the end of the alligator clips by wrapping them around the base of the clips. Attach the alligator clips to the wires that read “Line” and “Defr.”

    • 3

Press the jumper to set the GE Profile into defrost mode.

    • 4

Hold the light stick over the line wires to see if electricity is moving through them. If so, the defrost heater is working.

    • 5

Hold your hand over the back of the refrigerator to see if it is getting hot. If so, the defrost heater is working.

    • 6

Remove the alligator clips from the motherboard and replace the back panel. Push your refrigerator back in its place.
