How to Change a Thermocouple on a 24 Gas Oven

A thermocouple is a heat-activated safety device used in many modern gas appliances, including a 24-inch oven. The thermocouple heats up when the pilot light control is turned to the ignite position. At the right temperature, the thermocouple sends an electrical pulse to the gas valve, which opens to light the oven. If the thermocouple is defective, the burner will not light and the oven will not heat. Replacing the part takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off all oven controls and wait for the appliance to reach room temperature.

    • 2

Turn the lever in the gas line clockwise as far as it will turn to shut off the gas.

    • 3

Unplug the oven's power cord, which supplies electricity for the igniter.

    • 4

Remove the service panel on the oven using the nut driver to take out the bolts. The thermocouple is positioned between the gas valve and the tube for the pilot light.

    • 5

Loosen the screw on each side of the thermocouple where the part connects below the screw heads with wires.

    • 6

Pull the Y-shaped clip attached to the wire on each side of the thermocouple from under the screw heads.

    • 7

Place the new part in position and slip the Y-shaped connector on each end under a screw head. Tighten the screws.

    • 8

Fasten the service panel onto the oven with the bolts and nut driver.

    • 9

Plug in the oven's electrical cord and turn the gas valve handle counterclockwise as far as it will go.
