How to Change the Ignitor on a Thermador Professional Gas Stove

Thermador gas stoves in the Professional Series use an ignition system known as a hot-surface ignitor to light the burner that heats the stove. The flat tip on the ignitor heats with electrical resistance until it glows orange. A sensor detects when the ignitor is hot enough to combust gas. This sends a signal to the valve, which opens to light the Thermador. If the ignitor stops working, the Thermador will not light. Replacing the part takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Thermador controls. When the stove cools, close the gas valve behind the appliance, turning the lever on the valve clockwise.

    • 2

Unplug the Thermador's power cord, which provides electricity to heat the ignitor.

    • 3

Remove the service panel on the back of the Thermador using a screwdriver. The ignitor assembly consists of a flat prong resembling a thin, metal fork connected to a ceramic or resin block. A pair of wires from the block are permanently attached to a plug that fits in the power socket inside the Thermador.

    • 4

Disconnect the wired plug from the back of the defective part.

    • 5

Twist the two screws holding the part counterclockwise to remove the ignitor from the bracket that holds it in front of the gas valve.

    • 6

Set the new part in the same position and tighten the two screws securely. Do not touch any part of the metal tip.

    • 7

Connect the wired plug to the power socket.

    • 8

Reconnect the service panel with screws to the back of the Thermador.

    • 9

      Open the gas valve.
