How to Troubleshoot a Loose Ariens Snowblower Choke Lever

Ariens snowblowers come in six models, five of which are gas powered, all designed for removing snow in extreme conditions. On gas-powered snowblowers, the choke lever is used to cut off the air supply to a cold engine before you start it, making it easier for the gas in the combustion chamber to ignite. If the choke level lever is unusually loose, the choke may open or close at inopportune times and prevent the engine from running smoothly. Troubleshooting the choke lever on an Ariens snowblower requires the removal of the snowblower's carburetor shroud.

Instructions

    • 1

Take out the start key from the ignition or disconnect the spark plug to prevent the snowblower from accidentally starting while you're troubleshooting the loose choke lever.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the shroud covering the carburetor; the type and number of screws varies by model. Lift the shroud off of the carburetor and set it aside. Reserve the removed screws for reassembly.

    • 3

Examine the choke assembly. Check to ensure that the linkage pin is connected to both the choke lever and carburetor. Reinsert the linkage pin if you find that it's wiggled free of either component.

    • 4

Inspect the screw on the choke lever mounting bracket. Tighten the screw if it appears loose.

    • 5

Replace the carburetor shroud. Reinsert and tighten the removed screws. Return the start key to the ignition or reconnect the spark plug.
