How to Bypass a Wall Switch for a Motion Sensor

Motion sensors detect air disturbances of a specific volume, triggering lights or an alarm in security applications. The sensor typically is wired to an on/off switch, which can be activated at night. If the sensor detects movement, a floodlight or other signal is activated when the switch is in the "On" position. Bypassing the switch enables you to test the circuit quickly if there is any problem with the operation of the motion sensor. This should be a temporary measure to troubleshoot the switch, not a permanent solution for a defective switch.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the motiion sensor with the switch in the "On" position. If the sensor works, you'll know the switch is operational. If the sensor does not work, try the bypass.

    • 2

Shut off the electricity to the motion sensor equipment at the circuit breaker.

    • 3

Remove the screw holding the cover plate on the wall switch.

    • 4

Take out the two screws holding the wall switch to the metal box inside the wall. Pull gently on the switch to remove it from the box.

    • 5

Loosen the two screws on the edge or back of the switch, depending on the model, to pull loose the two wires.

    • 6

Twist the bare ends of the two wires together. Screw on a cone-shaped wire connector over the splice.

    • 7

Turn on the breaker and test the motion sensor. If it now operates normally, the switch is defective and should be replaced.
