How to Raise the Pressure of an Oil Furnace

Oil furnaces function by burning a mist of oil that’s released from nozzles inside the furnace’s firebox. In order for the most efficient burn, the oil pumps need to move at a certain pressure, usually between 100 and 150 pounds per square inch. If the pressure on your oil furnace is low, too much oil is being wasted to heat your home. Raising the pressure on the oil pumps will allow you to use less oil and make your furnace more energy efficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your oil furnace’s maintenance hatch, which is situated on the front of your oil furnace.

    • 2

Locate the pressure pump valve on your oil furnace and look at the reading. If it’s below 100 psi, it should be raised. Consult your furnace’s manual to find out how high of a psi the pump should operate at.

    • 3

Turn the pressure pump valve on the oil furnace to the left by 1 to 2 inches and observe the change in the pressure reading. Keep turning the valve by 1 to 2 inches until the pressure is the proper reading for your furnace.
