How to Remove the Black Rubber Plug From the Suction Line on a Freezer Compressor

The suction line on a freezer compressor creates a vacuum for injecting refrigerant used to cool the appliance. Refrigerant is then drawn through the compressor tubes during normal operation. The line is open at one end, but capped with a rubber plug to seal the system. If the compressor must be recharged or replaced, the black plug must be removed before the part can be installed. This simple procedure takes only a few minutes using basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the freezer and unplug the power cord.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to take off the back panel of the freezer, exposing the compressor inside. The plug is on the end of the coiled compressor tube.

    • 3

Puncture the center of the plug with a needle to release the suction pressure. The sound of air rushing into the tube is normal.

    • 4

Grip the sides of the slide-on plug with needle nose pliers to pull it off the suction line.
